The Legend of Korra – Mighty Avatar

The Legend of Korra is an action beat ‘em up game set in the same universe as the TV show of the same name and Avatar: The Last Airbender. I have never seen the TV show that the game is based on but I have seen Avatar: The Last Airbender so I am somewhat familiar with the lore of the game. You play as Korra an Avatar who can control all four elements.

Korra is tasked with saving the world after the arrival of an ancient evil. Early on in the game you lose all use of your elemental bending powers and over the course of 8 stages you must fight for what is rightfully yours.

+ Nice cartoony graphics which are quite similar to the style of the TV show
+ Interesting story (presuming you know a little about the universe the game is set in)
+ A badass main character, having the ability to control all four elements is really cool
+ A couple of boss fights felt a bit tedious but the last two were an absolute blast and more than made up for it
+ Finally beating a boss in this game gives you a great feeling of success
+ Good combo system which makes getting high combos easier rather than harder
+ Towards the end of the game you become able to use all of your powers as the Avatar which is a lot of fun
+ Awesome finishing moves
+ Fun quicktime events (never thought I’d say that so well done Platinum)
+ Great animations
+ Fun and challenging combat which will leave you wanting more
+ Some cool temple run style sections in some of the missions
+ Really cool cutscenes which are the same style as the show so they’re basically mini episodes
+ Well designed levels and nice backgrounds
+ Completing the game unlocks the Extreme difficulty for the real Avatar inside you as well as a pro-bending mode which is a fictional sport within the game’s universe
+ Controls very well (using a 360 controller)
+ Great voice acting
+ Good sound effects
+ Frequent checkpoints

The Legend of Korra

+/- The camera is a little bit awkward at times but for the most part it isn’t too bad

- Not much enemy variety. There are three different skins of the same enemy with different powers who are the main enemies, three element benders who you come across a few times over the course of the game, a couple of mechtanks and some enemies from the spirit world
- Only 8 missions which took me about 6.5 hours to complete
- No lip sync for in-game dialogue which is a bit weird

Verdict: 8 / 10

All-in-all a fun beat ‘em up game set in the Avatar universe with great combat and visuals which more than make up for the game’s minor flaws.
